Data import on lookup fields fail

I am importing account data from and excel file.

The Account needs to be linked to a Contact, so the Account has a custom lookup field to Contact.

When importing data and providing the correct email address for the Contact lookup, the following exception occurs:

Either the lookup value for Contact Owner is invalid or you don’t have permission to access it.
